An Introduction to Poetry (For those who don’t like poetry)

  • Square Halo Gallery 37 N. Market St. 17603 US (map)

Caroline (Nixon) Covington

Why this Forum?

We all know that poetry is valuable and supposed to be good for us, but how often do we find that we actually like it?

Before she could learn to like poetry, Caroline needed someone to introduce her to it. And she suspects that she's not alone in having to learn to like it.

We'll talk about some ways to approach poetry, how reading poetry is different from reading prose, and most of all we'll enjoy some poetry together. Our hope is that the evening will give you a new or renewed affection for poetry.

Who is Caroline Covington?

Caroline (Nixon) Covington is a Lancaster native, now living on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

In undergrad she studied nursing, Bible, and music. In grad school she studied history. Her biggest questions center on the intellectual history of the Church and how historical moments affect our theology and our Christian practice.

She is deeply influenced by the terms she spent as a student and helper at English L'Abri. Her affection for poetry began at L'Abri, where several people helped to introduce her to it.

She currently fills her days gardening, knitting, cooking, talking on the phone with family and friends, and working alongside her husband, Will, caring for their 1790s home.

This summer she spent 5 weeks walking the Camino de Santiago (Frances route) with her sister Emily.

What to Expect?

  • Caroline’s warm presentation on a chilly November evening.

  • Q&A as usual.

  • Awesome decaf coffee, other drinks, and snacks to match the mood.

Who’s This Event For?

If you’re already at home with poetry, come and enjoy as Caroline shares a few of her favorites. But if you have never really liked poetry but felt like you should, this evening is especially for you.
